David Wong (Illinois, USA, 1975), seudónimo de Jason Pargin, escritor de humor y editor de la web satírica Cracked.com, cursó estudios de radio y televisión en la Southern Illinois University. En 1999 comenzó a publicar en su propia web de humor Pointless Waste of Time (Absurda Pérdida de Tiempo) un serial en línea que llegó a contar con setenta mil lectores. Esta historia por entregas, de la que Wong iba publicando un episodio nuevo cada día de Halloween, es la fuente original de la posterior novela John muere al final (2007), en cuya redacción reconoce su autor haber tenido en cuenta los comentarios y críticas que los lectores aportaban tras la aparición de cada capítulo.

El director de culto entre los aficionados al cine de terror Don Coscarelli (Fantasma, Bubba Ho-Tep) quedó inmediatamente fascinado tras leer la disparatada historia de Wong y se embarcó en su versión cinematográfica. La película se estrenó finalmente con el mismo título de la novela en 2013.

Decent horror, awful humour

The novel doesn't do a very good job fusing horror and comedy. Both exist in the book, but it feels more like there are designated horror segments and designated comedy/action segments that you whip between at the author's whim. The horror is quite evocative and enjoyable, but the bulk of the book is the action and the comedy, which is so bad it's insulting. It's not witty or clever, it's crass, violent, and gratuitously edgy, with penis and shit jokes and characters who say slurs and bad guys who punch everyone in the balls making up the bulk of the author's comedic repertoire.

If you enjoy that sort of stuff, you might find the book enjoyable. I certainly don't object to reading books with transgressive, strange, or potentially offensive material, but in this novel it feels like meaningless shock humour, edge for the sake of edge, serving no purpose other …

It's an agonising read if the humour doesn't work for you, and it did not work for me at all.
