I really really liked this, and I’m saying that first because I want to emphasize it. I devoured it. It was really good and I only have one little complaint! I’m kinda tired of the “gay-as-a-twist” trope. I felt like there wasn’t enough queer rep, and I absolutely predicted the twist but it would be nice if YA books could abandon gay as a twist and only having one queer character. We’re trying (well, some of us) to move toward a normal society that doesn’t treat everyone as straight until proven otherwise, right?
But aside from that, and it’s kind of an afterthought, at the end.... sidebar: why do people just suddenly kiss other people in this book with no hint of consent?
Aside from those two complaints, this is a really good book and people should read it. It made me miss Kim’s Convenience. 4.5 stars

THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. The whole time I was thinking about how much Ursula K LeGuin would love it because Becky Chambers put so much anthropology into it, and how it made me feel like how I felt reading Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which literally was the book that made me fall in love with Science Fiction because the characters are so fun and lovable and the story has humor in it. This group of people is amazing and Becky Chambers’ writing is perfect. I was totally immersed. Read it.

I really really loved this book. Sometimes I get frustrated when stories about trans kids rely heavily on traditional gender stereotypes to explain how a kid knew they were trans which isn’t fair or accurate. This book did not do that.
